Small Apartment, Big Storage: 5 Principles
Small apartments teach you one thing fast: every inch has to earn its keep. Here are five principles we've learned.
Small apartments teach you one thing fast: every inch has to earn its keep. Here are five principles we've learned from outfitting dozens of compact spaces.
1. Go vertical before horizontal
Floor space is finite; wall space is not. Before you buy anything that sits on the floor, ask whether it could hang or stack instead.
2. Choose furniture that stores
A bed with drawers, a bench with a lift-top, an ottoman that opens — these are the workhorses of small-space living.
3. Use the back of every door
An over-the-door hook or rack adds storage without claiming a single inch of room.
4. Make storage visible
In a small space, closed cabinets read as heavy. Open shelving and clear containers keep the room feeling larger than it is.
5. Edit ruthlessly
The most organized small apartment is the one with the least in it. Storage can't fix over-accumulation — only editing can.
